Astrology is the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies, such as planets and stars, and how they are believed to influence human affairs and natural events. It is often associated with horoscopes, which are based on an individual's birth chart. These charts are calculated based on the positions of celestial bodies at the time of a person’s birth, and astrologers interpret these positions to make predictions or provide insights into personality traits, relationships, career, and other aspects of life.
There are several systems of astrology, with Western, Vedic (Indian), and Chinese astrology being the most widely known.
- Western Astrology: Based on the twelve zodiac signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc.) which correspond to specific time periods of the year. Western astrology also includes elements like planets, houses, and aspects (the angles formed between celestial bodies).
- Vedic Astrology: Originating from India, this system uses the sidereal zodiac, which differs from the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. Vedic astrology places a strong emphasis on the Moon’s position in the birth chart.
- Chinese Astrology: Based on a twelve-year cycle, each year being represented by an animal (Rat, Ox, Tiger, etc.) and is associated with certain personality traits and fortunes.
Astrology is often viewed as a pseudoscience, as its predictions and claims are not supported by empirical scientific evidence. However, many people find personal meaning and value in astrology, using it for self-reflection or as a guide for decision-making.
